Forensic psychology is a field that deals with both psychology and the law. Forensic psychologists can perform many roles and it is definitely not "CSI" (Crime Scene Investigation). Forensic psychologists are involved in different aspects of law, e.g criminal (mentally ill offenders), civil (psychological injury and compensation) and family (custody of children of divorce family).

Some of the functions typically performed within forensic psychology include:

- competency evaluations

- child custody evaluations

-sentencing recommendations

-evaluations of the risk of reoffending

-testimony as an expert witness

About the Speaker:

Dr Julia Lam is a Forensic Psychologist with Promises Pte Ltd and Raffles Counselling Centre. Promises is a mental health and addictions consulting and training company established to help healthcare professionals and individuals in Singapore.

Dr Julia Lam completed her professional doctorate in forensic psychology at the University of Melbourne and her doctoral thesis was on problem gambling under the supervision of Professor Michael Kyrios. Julia worked as a lecturer and tutor in several tertiary institutions . Julia lectured widely on Introduction to Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Medical Psychology, Personality Psychology, Development Psychology, Problem Gambling, Communication Skills and Research Methods.
