To Whom Much Is Given – The History of Graduates’ Christian Fellowship
in Singapore 1955-2005   2nd Edition

By Bobby E.K. Sng and Tong Suit Chee
Published by Graduates’ Christian Fellowship, 2005

This second edition is an update on the history of the Graduates’ Christian Fellowship (GCF) by Dr Bobby Sng, who first traced the events of the Fellowship from 1955-1992 in the first book. Published in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the GCF, the new book has six additional chapters. These chapters are - the Fellowship’s events from

1993-2001, and from 2001-2005, key events in GCF’s history, list of GCF Presidents, list of Theological Scholarship Fund Recipients and key facts on GCF today.

As highlighted by Dr Sng in the preface, the book serves to answer questions from a new generation of graduates, who has come on the scene and may not know much of the GCF. It attempts to answer questions such as – why and how was the fellowship found? What does it seek to do? What have been some of the problems or issues faced? How has it succeeded or failed in achieving its aims?

It is interesting to read about the GCF’s beginnings on 25 June 1955 till 2005 –and to see God’s faithfulness throughout these years. Indeed, by 2005, the Fellowship has attracted more than 500 members, and grown to be the legal umbrella for five sectional groups, seven ministries and one associated ministry.

The book faithfully records GCF’s far-reaching impact through the decades. It highlighted various initiatives such as making numerous representations, organising seminars and publishing books over many issues facing society and the Christian community. The Fellowship had also supported 16 Christians (including two bishops) through the Theological Scholarship Fund; raised funds to support various Christian organisations, the Fellowship of Evangelical Students and Discipleship Training Centre, and initiated St Luke’s Hospital.

A good read for those who are keen to know more about GCF, its vision, challenges and activities in its first 50 years of history.

Living Wisely, Finishing Well- A Collection of Sermons

By The Rt Rev John Tan Teng Wai
Edited by Tong Suit Chee

Published by the Graduates' Christian Fellowship, 2007

As part of its vision to contribute towards Christian thinking and a Biblical voice, the Graduates' Christian Fellowship has decided to launch a series of books featuring sermons, messages or talks by its members. The first of these books is a collection of 15 sermons by The Right Rev John Tan Teng Wai, who was the GCF President for three terms in the 1970s. He was also the founding principal of St Andrew's Junior College and a Bishop of the Diocese of Singapore.

Leaning towards a Biblical and expository teaching style, The Right Rev John Tan Teng Wai shared his messages given over the past decades. The topics are- Living Wisely; Life's Time Zone; Facing the Future; Beyond the Third Generation; Signs of Backsliding; Commitment, Submission and Partnership; To Judge or Not To Judge; How Sharp is Your Mission Vision?; God Uses Ordinary People; Serving Without Fanfare; Following Christ Is No Sentimental Journey; Don't Forget Your Position; God's Grace; Christmas; and Finishing Well. Some really well-thought-out and good sermons.

In the sermon “Living Wisely”, the author cautions readers to beware of covetousness (Luke12: 22-34) and beware of worrying (Luke 12:22-34). He reminds us that in this day and age, many people are in danger of being covetous although they think they are not. Like the rich farmer, we think wealth and possessions will give us the insurance for a good and long life. Instead we should not store things up for ourselves but be rich towards God.

The author gives some advice on overcoming worry. We need to realise that God knows our needs because He is our heavenly Father and He is the God who loves us. Next, we need also to develop a heavenly vision and learn to put God’s kingdom first in everything because that is an everlasting kingdom. If our hearts are set on the transient things in this world, then we will always worry. But if our hearts are set on things eternal, then God’s peace will guard our hearts and minds from worrying.

The two sermons, which I found most insightful, are Life’s Time Zones (Ecclesiastes 3:1-17) and Beyond the Third Generation (Joshua 24 to Judges 2:23). The first deals with our times of life on earth and eternity’s time zone –and their challenges.  He gave some steps for a greater sense of timing in life. These are – present your schedule to God, monitor your attitude for gratitude, and invest your time in what will last.

Beyond the Third Generation discusses the three phases of generation drift and gives some tips on checking the generation drift. These are – build up a godly legacy in our home, test the beliefs of your parents so that they an have firsthand experiences with God, and we need to realise that there is a time for everything, time is not always on our side and we need to strike when the iron is hot.

Carry the Spices – Singaporean Doctors in Medical Missions and Pastoral Ministry

Editors:  Chua Choon Lan and Tan Lai Yong
Publisher: Medical Missions Foundation, Singapore,  2007

Retail Price: $30 per copy from HealthServe Ltd (tel: 67439774 or admin@cmdf.org.sg) or Christian bookshops.  Discounted price of $25 per copy for FES/GCF/CMDF’s members.

This book is a collection of 28 essays by 24 Singaporean medical doctors and dental surgeons whom the Lord has called to carry “spices” to the communities both locally and beyond.  These professionals learnt that the obstacles and challenges in healthcare in poverty-stricken regions are immense and the issues complex but found that God asked them only to be faithful and obedient – to carry the “spices” and He will remove the obstacles. So they went to serve in Africa, East Asia, Central and South Asia, South-East Asia and Singapore.

The professionals included many GCF members such as Tan Lai Yong, Andrew Ng, Robert Solomon, Richard Hui, Moses Tay, Chua Chung Kai and Soh Ling Ling.

Their stories and testimonies are inspiring as they struggled with new languages, professional and family preparation, cultural adaptation, conflicts and poor equipment, but with their faith shining true. It was interesting to hear of pioneers such as Andrew Ng, who served as a missionary doctor with SIM in Niger for 12 years since 1977, as East Asia Director of SIM from 1990-2005 and now as Deputy International Director for Asia-Pacific SIM from 2006 till present.

Testimonies by a younger generation of medical and dental professionals were heart-warming and oftentimes, moving. Richard Hui, who works with a non-government organisation in rural community health care in Central Asia, shared on his professional, spiritual and family preparation, and adjustments to a new language, culture and water-shortage environment. He said: “The greatest challenge at work is not the lack of resources or opportunities, or the three hours (two-way) spent in commuting three times a week. It is trying to change the hearts and minds of the people who have followed their traditions for hundreds of years.” Soh Ling Ling reflected on her eight-month stint at the Mukinge Hospital in Zambia, which was a “dream-come-true” experience for her despite some initial discomfort over the hygiene level. “Clinical medicine came alive! It was no longer theory but real-life practice,” she enthused.

It is insightful to read of the calling of Bishop Robert Solomon, retired Bishop Moses Tay,  Associate Vicar Louis Tay and Chua Chung Kai as they served the Singapore church and Christian community.  Moses Tay pointed out: “This is the day of unprecedented opportunities and urgency. Let the medics arise in obedience to the Lord we serve.”

I am glad that we now have a record of these Singaporeans who have and are still serving faithfully in Africa, Asia and Singapore. This 259-page book with coloured photographs is a must-read for those interested in and support missions.

Here are some highlights from the book - Mr Stuart McAllister's contributions are "Introduction to Globalisation", "Living in An Age of Extremes", "The Transformation of Everyday Life", and "The Transformation Vision" while Dr Lee Soo Ann discusses "Some Socio-economic Dimensions of Globalisation Today". The aim of this book is to further discussions and understanding of the impact of globalisation and Christian responses. As a fellowship of inter-denominational Christian professionals seeking to be salt and light in this world, the Graduates' Christian Fellowship believes that the publication of this book will contribute, in some small way, towards this aim.

In His Good Time - The Story of the Church in Singapore, 1819 - 2002.
by Dr Bobby Sng

This is an excellent read  providing a clear overview of the history of the Church in Singapore, right up to the present.

Here are some comments about this book :

It is a special joy to commend this third edition of the story of Christians in Singapore. There is an increased sense of history today. Our fast changing social landscape is the arena of divine grace, sovereignty and goodness and these are reflected in the latest edition of this much read and used standard text. Our debt to Dr. Sng is further deepened by the fact that even in his “retirement” years, he has offered us his labour of love. He seeks to provide a much needed perspective and wisdom for present and future generations. The book calls all Christians to be involved and to be responsible for the continuing story of the Gospel in our island state.

- The Rt. Rev. Dr. John Chew
   Bishop of Singapore

Dr. Sng’s In His Good Time has become a classic history of the Church in Singapore. This revised edition updates the story, covering the final decade of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. In a world that is going through turmoil and unimagined changes, God is still at work in His Church and leading His mission. Christians face unprecedented challenges and the need to discern God’s will, defend His truth, and actively proclaim and demonstrate His love in Christ continues. Dr. Sng has done the Church a great service by carefully noting what God is doing in, among and through His people.
